  • The STIHL MS170 starter drum kit is intended for repairing the standard manual starter mechanism. This new non-original Winzor kit consists of the starter drum, starter pawls and the spring that controls them.

    When the starter rope is pulled, the drum begins to rotate and the pawls engage with the engine's starter coupling. This action turns the crankshaft and allows the engine to be started. A worn drum, damaged pawls or a deformed spring can cause slipping. In such cases the starter rope pulls, but the mechanism does not reliably turn the engine.

    Installation recommendations

    Before installation, clean the starter housing. Remove frayed rope fibers, dust and broken plastic fragments. Also check the starter rope, the return spring and the engine starter coupling.

    Install the drum and pawls in their working positions. The spring must control the pawls' movement and must not obstruct the drum from turning freely. After assembling the mechanism, pull the starter handle slowly several times. The drum should rotate smoothly, the pawls should engage reliably, and the rope should return freely.
