    A scored cylinder, damaged piston or worn rings reduce compression. Therefore the engine may be hard to start, lose power or run unevenly under load.

    However, before fitting new parts it is important to determine the cause of the old cylinder failure. A lean fuel mixture, leaking seals, a clogged air filter, blocked cooling fins or incorrect oil amount can also damage the new cylinder.

    Check the crankshaft bearings, the connecting rod and the piston pin needle bearing. Also carefully remove metal particles and abrasive dust from the crankcase. This is especially important for cut-off saws, because a damaged filtration system can allow mineral dust into the engine.

    When assembling, lubricate the piston, rings and cylinder with two-stroke engine oil. Correctly orient the piston, align the rings with the locating pins and use new gaskets.
