Clutch operation and failure symptoms

As engine RPM increases, centrifugal forces cause the clutch weights to spread out and press against the drum. The drum then begins to turn the sprocket and the cutting chain. When the engine returns to idle, the springs retract the weights, so the chain should stop.

Worn contact surfaces or weakened springs can cause slipping, overheating and uneven engagement. However, the chain can also move due to excessively high idle speed. Therefore first check the carburetor adjustment.

Before installation inspect the clutch drum, sprocket, needle bearing, crankshaft thread, oil pump gear and the chain brake. Also remove accumulated sawdust and oil residues.
