  • This STIHL MS361 clutch is a three-shoe centrifugal clutch assembly designed for STIHL MS341 and MS361 petrol chainsaws. It replaces a worn clutch that slips, engages the chain unevenly or fails to reliably transfer engine power to the clutch drum.

    The clutch mounts to the engine crankshaft and operates inside the clutch drum. As revs increase, centrifugal force pushes the three shoes outward. They then press against the drum and transmit power to the sprocket and the cutting chain.

    When the engine returns to idle, the springs retract the shoes. As a result, the drum and chain can stop while the engine continues to run. If the springs weaken or the shoes wear unevenly, the chain may start to rotate at idle.

    However, clutch overheating or poor power transmission does not always indicate only the clutch has failed. Also check the drum, the sprocket and the needle bearing. A deeply worn drum surface can quickly damage new shoes, and a seized bearing causes overheating and vibration.

    Before removing the clutch, disconnect the ignition spark plug lead and lock the piston with a suitable tool. Follow the indicated unscrewing direction and the service manual, as the clutch thread's unscrewing direction differs from standard fasteners.

    Protect the clutch shoes and the inside of the drum from oil and grease. After installation, manually rotate the drum and then check whether the chain does not move while the engine is idling.
