Clutch for STIHL 038 038AV MS381 MS380 chainsaws #1119-160-2002

This STIHL 038 clutch is a three-pad centrifugal clutch assembly designed for selected STIHL 038 series, MS380 and MS381 gasoline chainsaw models. It replaces a worn clutch that slips, overheats or engages the cutting chain unevenly.

As engine RPM increases, centrifugal force expands the pads and presses them against the clutch drum. The drum then begins to turn the sprocket and the cutting chain. When the engine returns to idle, the springs retract the pads, allowing the chain to stop.

Replacement may be necessary if you notice signs of overheating, broken springs, worn friction surfaces or overly loose pads. Also check the clutch drum, sprocket and needle bearing, as wear of these parts can also cause noise, vibration or poor power transfer.

The clutch has a left-hand thread. Therefore, turn it in the correct direction and use a clutch removal tool. Also keep the friction surfaces free from oil and grease.

After installation, rotate the drum by hand and check that it moves freely. Then safely start the chainsaw and ensure the chain does not move at idle. If the chain still turns, check the carburetor and idle adjustment.
