As engine RPMs increase, centrifugal force presses the clutch weights against the drum. The drum then begins to rotate the sprocket and the chain. When RPMs decrease, the spring retracts the weights, so the chain should stop.

Worn working surfaces or a weakened spring can cause slipping, overheating and uneven engagement. However, a chain moving at idle may also indicate excessively high engine RPMs. Therefore, first check the carburetor adjustment.

Before installation inspect the drum, sprocket, needle bearing, crankshaft thread, oil pump gear and the chain brake. Also remove accumulated sawdust and oil residues.

After mounting, turn the drum by hand and check that it does not jam. Finally, start the saw safely and make sure the chain does not move at idle.
